Police target jaywalkers as pedestrian fatalities increase

Police will target jaywalkers and pedestrians who cross roads while using their mobile phone, as part of the "Don't Do Your Dash" operation starting Monday in Melbourne's CBD.
There has been a 30 percent increase in pedestrian faralities so far this year, according ro Transport Accident Commission figures.
Officers will target people who in correctly cross roads, especially pedestrians at traffic lights and tram stops.
Those caught failing to obey traffic lights or improperly walking on the read could be slugged with a $74 fine.
"We don't want pedestrians to be injured or killed while doing something as simple as crossing the road," said Sergeant Mark Rose from Melbourne Highway Patrol.
